John Michael Deguara was born in San Francisco, the son of John and Emanuella (Manda Borg) in August of 1943. Five years later his brother Charles was born. The Maltese family nickname is (ta lorbu and ta Ghawdixn). He grew up in the Bayview district known then as Butcher Town. He attended St. Paul of the Shipwreck Church. He went to St. Boniface School from fifth to eighth grade. There his interactions with Franciscan Brothers Adrian and Phillip inspired him to become a Franciscan. He attended Galileo High School from 1958 to 1961. He grew up fluent in Maltese (maintaining it over the years with very little interpersonal fellow Maltese by interactions with Palestinian friends, and YouTube videos of Maltese plays and folk songs). He has made frequent visits to Malta.
Franciscan brotherhood: Entered at Serra Retreat Center in Malibu, Jan 4, 1962; then as a candidate to San Damiano, in Danville then to St. Francis Retreat, San Juan Baptiste. His postulancy was at Mission San Luis Rey from 1964 to 1966; then to novitiate at San Miguel Mission 1966 to 1967; then 1 year at Serra Retreat Center, and then finally 1968 to Nov. 1970 at St Anthony’s Seminary in Santa Barbara. He left before taking solemn vows. His major occupation was as a cook. He considered his Franciscan experience as one of the best parts of his life. His years with the Friars exposed him to the need for education, art and an open inquisitive spirit. At Santa Barbara, he became friends with a Catholic family with many children and this experience of family life led him to reconsider being a Franciscan.
He then returned to the Bay Area and worked for a short time in the kitchen at St. Joseph Hospital in San Francisco. Then for one year he traveled overseas, visiting most of Europe, Palestine, and Morocco. From Malta, he was cook on a British yacht docking at Italian, French and Spanish islands and then returned home to San Mateo. He then got a job at St. Francis High School in Mountain View, with the Brothers of the Holy Cross. He met his wife Monique there and they married in 1974 at St Antony’s Church in San Francisco. They moved to South Bend, IN, in 1977.
He and his wife have two daughters and two sons. They also have eleven grandchildren of whom they are very proud.
John’s occupation history has been in the hospitality services and cooking food services. He worked as General Manager of the University Club of Notre Dame University and then from 1997 as Food Service Manager for the Juvenile Justice Center, from which he retired.
While at Notre Dame he and his wife became friends with Maltese Professors Joseph Buttigieg and Michael Chetcuti. Professor Joseph Buttigieg was the father of US presidential candidate, Peter Buttigieg. Monique made a baby blanket for Peter when he was born.
He enjoys caring for bonsai trees, researching Maltese and family history and volunteering at a soup kitchen. He and Monique are very involved in their Parish Church. They have traveled to Malta many times and visited various European countries. They have been to China, Turkey, the Arctic Circle and through the Panama Canal. John is also a member of the Lay Cistercians of Gethsemane Abbey in Kentucky.
In late December 2020, he had a stroke with right sided paraplegia and aphasia. He has since had a full recovery that has not stopped him from traveling or being involved in the civil and parish community.
His wife Monique received an MBA in nonprofit admin. She worked for the Sisters of St. Francis Health Services in Mishawaka, Indiana. She was the director of central purchasing for their Health System.

Peter Joseph Deguara, 86, passed away January 3, 2021 surrounded by his family. He was born in San Francisco on June 2, 1934. Pete is survived by his wife of 65 years, Barbara; his children Michelle( George) LeeAnne (Eric), Dante (Laura ); 4 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren, and his brother Sal (Ethel). Daughter Dawn Deguara predeceased him. Pete was extremely proud of his entire family. For 30+ years Pete drove trucks and then owned/operated Deguara Limousine for 17 years. Pete was an avid car enthusiast and enjoyed collecting cars and attending/participating in car shows. Pete's friends, of which he had many, held a special place in his heart and life's activities. His smile will never be forgotten and lives on in all that loved and knew him.
