Sr Adaline Attard RCSJ was born on 5 December 1908 in Valletta, Malta. She died on 24 September 1994 at Kenwood, Albany, NY, USA, at age 85. Biography Adelina Attard was born in Valletta, Malta, on December 5, 1908 to Giuseppe and Marianna (Borg) Attard and was baptised at the Church of Santa Maria Porto Salvo in Valletta. She was the second child and first daughter in a family of eight children, six of whom died very young.
Her mother died at the age of 31 when Adelina was nine years old. Her father, who had been educated by the Christian Brothers and was a master tailor, later remarried. Adelina was sent to live with her grandparents who sent her, along with her sister Ines, to the Sisters of St. Joseph at the age of 10. There she learned English and Italian and developed the sewing skills in which she was later to excel.
Adelina joined the Society of the Sacred Heart, at St. Julian’s, on January 25, 1930, four days after Salvina The Maltese Presence in North America July 2021

The original part of this complex, at 525 Lafayette Avenue, was the residence of William C. Neff between 1868 and 1876. Prior to purchasing the property in 1876, the Academy was located on Grandin Road. The Academy closed entirely in 1970.

Obituary: on 19 April 2023: Cherise Vassallo Babb
July 20, 1967 - April 14, 2023
With incredible sadness, we share that Cherise passed away on April 14, 2023. She was tragically taken in an accident while doing one of the things she was most passionate about, exercise. Taken from us too soon, with so much more life to live.
Cherise is preceded in death by her father Alphonse Vassallo and survived by her mother Ingrid, her daughters; Katie (Steven) Beard, Cassie Babb, her grandchildren; Kayden Beard, Kaylie Beard, and Karson Beard, her brother Ricky (Amy) Vasallo, nephews; Matt Vassallo and Andrew Vassallo, former husband Billy Babb.
Cherise was born and raised in San Francisco and deeply loved her city by the bay, forever proud to be a San Francisco girl. But she had country life dreams in her soul having grown up owning, riding, and showing horses. Cherise and her family moved to Escalon, CA in 1995, where she raised her 2 beautiful daughters and was a mom to many.
Most of her career was spent working for Stanislaus County in Social Services, for over 23 years. She was cherished by several lifelong friends and she made many friends easily throughout her life and career. Cherise was a vibrant, adventurous, and beautiful person who was kind to all she encountered. Always generous and always ready to lend a hand. All who met her could not help but be charmed by her.
Her interests were many, always ready for an adventure with many plans for her retirement years, including travel. She was a talented cook, witty humourist, and devoted daughter, mother, and loving "gram". She loved to make Sunday dinners for her family. Cherise's grandchildren were a great highlight of her life and a treasure to her. She took great pride in never missing their important events or milestones. She will be deeply missed.
Cherise loved God and her country.
Family services will be private but a celebration of life will be announced shortly.
Published by San Francisco Chronicle on Apr. 19, 2023. Cherise Vassallo was also known as Katherine Cherise Vassallo.

The first immigrants from #Malta to the #UnitedStates arrived in this country during the mid-eighteenth century to the city of New Orleans, Louisiana. Many Americans assumed Malta was part of Italy.

In some cases "Born Malta, Italy" was put on tombstones of Maltese because of the confusion. ( You will see this even reflected on immigration records that Italy is used as description of origin not Malta)

However, at this time and in the nineteenth century the Maltese who emigrated to the United States were still scarce. In fact, in the 1860s, only between five and ten Maltese emigrated to the United States every year. The majority of them were agricultural workers, and, in the case of #NewOrleans, market gardeners and vegetable dealers.

After World War I, in 1919, Maltese immigration to the US increased. Thus, just in the first quarter of 1920 more than 1,300 Maltese immigrated to the United States. Detroit, Michigan, with jobs in the expanding automobile industry, drew the largest share of immigrants.

It is believed that in the following years, more than 15,000 Maltese people emigrated to the United States, later getting U.S. citizenship.

A significant percentage of early Maltese immigrants intended to stay only temporarily for work, but many settled in the US permanently. In addition to Detroit, other industrial cities such as New York City, Los Angeles, and San Francisco, California, attracted Maltese immigrants.

Later, after World War II, the Maltese Government committed to pay passage costs to Maltese people who wanted to emigrate and live at least two years abroad. This program led to increased emigration by the people of the island and made up approximately 8,000 #Maltese who arrived to the United States between the years 1947 and 1977.

Also during this century, the island's government also promoted the Maltese emigration because the island was overpopulated. A Maltese community thrives in #SanPedro and #LongBeach.
