Born in Sliema, Caruana was educated at StJoseph's Secondary Technical School, PaolaHe obtained a library assistant's certificatefrom the City & Guilds of London Institute(1969) and was employed as library assistant at.the RUM (1967-69).Caruana emigrated to Sydney, Australia in Jaunuary 1973 and was employed as library assistant at Macquary University (NSW) andlater at Blacktown City (NSW). He was- then employed as migrant welfare officer with the department of immigration & ethnic affairs, assisting migrants and refugees with information and settlement advice (1976-84) and as district officer (multicultural) with the department of community services as a child protection worker (1984-89). He then joined the NSW department of school education as a community liaison officer with the aim of encouraging students to continue their education to Year 12 (1989-92). Since 1992 he has been regional community liaison officer (multicultural). He has also been acting as justice of the peace since 1976.

Caruana has published widely on topicsrelating to the oral history of migrants in Australia. He has recorded on cassette and video in English and Maltese over 80 oral history interviews with migrants from the Maltese islands who went to Australia in 1912-1939. His publications include oral History: A practical guide based Maltese Migration and Settlement in Australia (1993, with Dr B. Born in Sliema Malta, Mark Caruana migrated to Australia in January 1973 and has been an active member of the Sydney Maltese community since 1975.
He has written articles on the oral history of migrants in Australia. Mark has recorded on cassette and video, in both English and Maltese, over 120 oral history interviews, primarily with early settlers (1912-40) from the Maltese Islands who settled in Australia. He now records oral history interviews with post-war migrants.
For several years, he developed a close teamwork approach with the late George H Griffiths, a 1948 immigrant who had similar interests and together they published several awareness-raising articles in The Maltese Herald, a national ethnic newspaper based in Sydney.

This team-work approach was further strengthened when contact was made with Dr Barry York, from the Australian National Library Canberra, whose formal training in history and his greater opportunities of recording early Maltese settlers, as part of his academic studies towards a PhD in Maltese Migration History, opened up new horizons in expanding the then limited knowledge of the Maltese presence in Australia. They published Oral History, A Practical Guide a joint publication by the Centre for Immigration & Multicultural Studies, ANU Canberra 1996.

In the same year, he assisted Prof Helen Armstrong in her publication Migrant Heritage Places in Australia, a handbook for Group Co-ordinators, a project of the Australian Heritage Commission, aimed at developing a manual to assist migrant communities identify their own heritage places.

Mark is a strong believer that oral history is best done as a collaborative and co-operative venture.

His other contribution was in initiating the oral history recordings of the settlement history of Maltese in New Zealand, a team research project co-ordinated by Prof. Carmen Dalli of the Victoria University Wellington, which in July 2002 received welcomed funding from the NZ Ministry for Culture and Heritage.

Mark has compiled a database of Malta bills of health and passport applications for the years 1815-1939 totalling over 100,000 entries of applicants, which serves as a research tool on migration. The source is the Malta National Archives at Rabat Malta.

He also compiled a database of Maltese passengers, who disembarked at Ellis Island NY and other smaller USA ports (Boston, Philadelphia, Rhode Island, Baltimore, California and New Orleans). The source is ancestry.com. The total entries amount to around 23,000 and cover a 137 year period from 1820 to 1957. From 1946-57, some Maltese travelled by plane and these are also included.

More recently he has done some research on Maltese-Australian ANZACs jointly with Carmen Baxter nee Bonello and has assisted the Maltese RSL NSW Sub-branch in identifying the names of Maltese ANZACS in Australia and NZ. He currently is co-researching with Marianne Potts nee Vidal in a forthcoming book on a biography of Maltese ANZACS who joined the Australian and NZ Army.

For many years, Mark was involved on a committee level with the Maltese Welfare NSW, the Maltese Cultural Association of NSW and the Salesian Past Pupils & Friends of Don Bosco NSW as a co-founder and member. He currently is the President of the Don Bosco Association, which meets regularly for fellowship and raising funds for Salesian missions.

Mark was also the Vice-President of the Maltese Community Council of NSW (2016-2019) and was responsible for building up a resource library and archives centre where historical material on Maltese associations and migrants is kept for future researchers.

His current project is completing a database of all passports issued from Malta from 1900-1939 as a research tool which assists in migration studies, as well as completing a database of all Maltese who went to Canada and the USA from the early 1800s, a joint project with Dan Brock from Toronto Canada.

On Australia Day 2020, Mark was awarded the Order of Australia Merit (OAM) for his services to the Maltese community.

Mark is married to Antoinette Caruana and they have three children and six grandchildren.

Research: There were two boats with Maltese that left Malta in 1838 and 1840 that went to Guyana and Grenada in the West Indies, in a failed migration experiment to work as plantation workers. They soon discovered they were underpaid and treated at the same level as slaves.

After a year or two, they saved enough money to leave and they chose not to return to Malta but moved to America. They could have also gone to SF. In New Orleans, they worked as fruit peddlars and I have helped some descendants, who emailed me to trace their ancestor, so this is how I know.

I am making a number of mental notes (nothing in writing) of observations as someone looking into from the outside. For example, I noticed that a number of Maltese went for pig farming (which I take it in SF is known as hog ranch) and my guess is that from pig farm labourers they could have established themselves over time as pig farm owners. In Australia, they tended to go for market gardening and poultry farming. Not many went fr pig farmmng. Migration takes different patterns.

Also, I have hardly came across anyone from Gozo. Needless to say, Mosta is the number one, as to the town of birth. The same applies to Mackay Qld. There too, few Gozitans went. Gozitans tended to cut cane in Innisfail Qld but not Mackay, probably a case of chain migration of relations and friends from the same village..

Antonio Santi Prepared to Provo an Alibi at the Inquest.
“That man is the prinoe of liars.” said Dotective Bob Hogan last evening to a Chronicle reporter. The detective referred to Portelli, the Maltese. who is accused of murdering his partner, John Mifsult on Tuesday night. Hogan has been detailed to work on the case in conjunction with Patrolman Manning, who arrested Portelli.
" Every single statement which he has made," continued the deteollve, “he has contradicted or else it has boen proved false. There is no doubt in my mind that he committed the crime and he is now clumsily trying to lie out of it. Even if he is innocent, the mess of lies which he has told about the case would convict him. Wherever he has failed to contradict himself we can prove his statement false.
Hogan is convlnced that Antonio Santi, the man arrested under the name of Franchi had nothlng to do with the crime, and is positive Portelli aloue dld the fearful job. He learned yesterday that the day following tho quarrel on Saturday night Portelli and Mefsutt renewed hostilities, and beat each other with stunt sticks? until bystanders interrfered. That same night Portelli met Santi at the Bottle Koening saloon on Montgomery avenue, and in the presence of several persons spoke of his quarrel with Mefsutt. In the statement after arrest he said he had seen Santi last on Saturday. Several witnesses can be procured to prove that Portelli's room was open late on Tuesday night, and the other inmates of the lodglng-house where the crlme was committed are certain it took place before 9 o’clock on Tuesday nlght. Some of them were in thelr rooms before that hour, and it was impossible for tho terrific struggle to have taken place after that without attracting their attention.
The web of evidence accumulating about Portelli is very strong. He knew too much about the crime before the police ordered the room and with many of the particulars only the actual criminal himself could be acquainted, His statement about how the murderer got into Mefsutt's room by breaking a pane of glass in the window is proved to be wrong. At the inquest which will be held tomorrow morning it will be aliowed that the window was broken last week. It will also be shown that Portelli's window was open until a late hour on Tuesday night, notwithstanding his statement that the murderer got into the apartment that way and showed the chipa on the wlndow ledge as evidence.
Antonio Franohi, whose real name turna out to bo Santi is prepared to prove a complete alibi at the inquestl. Each of the accused men made statements yesterday which they swore to. Portelli stuck to the statement made the day before aud Santl gave an account of his whereabouts on the fatal night, He sald he had been on a apree since Moudayafternoon with two men named Beano and Barti, which was continued all through the night and into the next day. He was with tbese men until in the morning and then fell into the company of several others. When he started out he had $210 in money, and when arrested but $48 were fouud in hie pockets. Santi thinks he was robbed of a portion of his money by the two men with whom he waa spreeing. He says in his statement that he knew the deceased well and first met him in Malta before they came to this country. He then knew the murdered man in New Orleans. In that state he was employed in a fruit house and saw a countryman kill another. The murderer escaped and was never arrested, and since Santi had lived here he had been accused of committing the crime himself. This was not true, he claims. The only time he was ever arrested was in this city, when he wae charged with battery for assaulting a man who had cut his horse with a knlfe. The man he assaulted never appeared against him, and the case was dismissed. The police are inclined to believe Santi's story. Tony Santo was also known as Tony Sant.
