I was thrilled to see your website, and read all bout the BayView district, where my mother, Mary Tonna grew up on Newcomb Avenue.
Her father was Emmanuel Tonna, who died in the 1970s, and mother Carmella Cilia, who died in the late 80s. What rabbit she used to cook!
Emmanuel worked at Sea Island Sugar, and both of them did wartime duty at the Cannery, making munitions.
My mother was great friends with George Fenech, of ABC Upholstery. He married Ruth (maybe Camilleri) and had 2 sons, Ron and Steve.
She also was a friend of Walter Mazzei, of Mazzei Hardware- 5166 3rd St between Shafter and Thomas. I used to work there as a youngster, and the store is still there! I visit as often as I can.
I became friends through the classic car business with Dennis Magri, late of Magri Motors in SF. Dennis is married to a nice Italian woman, a DeMatteo, and is an avid collector of classic bikes and Aston Martin cars, as am I.
Anytime I meet a Maltese, we inevitably talk about SF, food, and shouting at holiday gatherings. Salami, more salami, and cheese!
My Irish relatives would flock to my mom's side of the family for holidays as the food was better!
