Emanuel Benjamin Vella

M, #6615, b. 20 June 1898, d. 2 May 1946
FatherClement Vella b. 20 Feb 1869, d. 10 Jul 1953
MotherMaria Carmela Azzopardi b. 10 Aug 1878, d. 18 Sep 1952
Emanuel Benjamin Vella was born on 20 June 1898 in Mosta, Malta.1 He was issued a Maltese Passport age 22; teacher, assist teacher govt. elem on 3 August 1920. Declared destination was London, England.1 He died on 2 May 1946 at Mosta, Malta, at age 47.1 Biography EMANUEL BENJAMIN (E.B.) VELLA was born in Mosta, on June 20, 1898. He is the eldest of seven sons of Clement and Carmela neè Azzopardi. Vella began his education at the Government Elementary School, Mosta. At a young age, together with his uncle Dunammarì Azzopardi, he ran the first center of Christian doctrine founded in Mosta by the Maltese Saint, Dun ?or? Preca.
At the age of 23, he became a school principal, after successfully completing a course at St Mary's College in England. He was the first Maltese to obtain the Board of Education Certificate with which he could teach in elementary schools throughout the English Empire. He studied Oriental languages ??at the University of London. When he returned to Malta, as headmaster, he was given a number of elementary schools, including St. Paul's Bay, Zabbar, Vittoriosa and Tarxien. After being appointed Inspector of Schools he had the duty to supervise the teaching of a number of subjects that were taught, including the Maltese language. He ran a training course in Maltese for school principals and organized evening classes for civil servants. He also taught Maltese at the Lyceum. In addition, E.B. Vella also organized evening courses in English for those Maltese who wished to emigrate.
Vella was a Member of the Maltese Writers' Association (from which the Maltese Academy was born). He was also the author of publications in Maltese. In the 1930s, in collaboration with ?or? Pisani, he published a series of reading books in Maltese for each year of Government primary schools, entitled ?abra ta ’Ward. This series lasted in use in schools until the 1960s. In addition to learning Maltese, E.B. Vella also insisted on teaching English professionally, so much so that he published a book, The Teaching of English in Our Primary Schools.

He loved the history of Malta. He helped Temi Zammit in the archaeological search, especially in the area around Mosta, his hometown. Vella was interested in the history of other Maltese villages. He wrote a number of books on some Maltese villages and included information he obtained from his own research. Among them we find: '?abbar and its Event' (1926), '?ejtun and Marsaxlokk' (1927), 'The History of Mosta with its Church' (1930), 'The History of Tarxien and Paola '(1932) and' The History of Birkirkara with its Collegiate '(1934). He had also started writing the history of Mdina but did not finish it.

E.B. Vella died a short life on May 2, 1946, at his home, next to the Mosta Church. He was married to Priscilla neè Tomlin and had three children, among them Reginald who, like him, was a headmaster of state schools and an author. Among the writings left by Reginald is a damn prose in Maltese, which he collected and published between 1953 and 1957 under the title ‘A Collection of Prose for Children.’ He also loved music. Like his father, he died a short life in 1968.

After the death of E.B. Vella, the National Poet Dun Karm Psaila, dedicated a sonnet to him, in which he describes him as: ‘Truly Maltese! Maltese in my heart, I loved her - To this little land where I was born."
Research: later known as E.B. Vella, an educator and author.
