First at her parents' home at 1615, and then when she married, across the street at 1628, in a wood-frame Victorian where she lived the rest of her life. Mrs. Mieallef, who was born in Malta and came here at the age of 2, loved the neighborhood and was committed to it. She was a member of the Corktown Development Council that Mary Gale Mieallef was responsible for getting the historic designation for the area. She also was active in community groups. Mrs. Mieallef, 78, died of complications from lung and heart disease on Saturday at Detroit Receiving Hospital. Tiger Stadium was the backdrop for much of the family life, C I J said her son, Charles. For five years, she worked as a sous-chef for the office staff, helping prepare breakfast and lunch. The family ran parking lots a block from the stadium and still have one at Church and 10th Streets. They also had a grocery store in the area. Mrs. Mieallef was active at Most Holy Trinity Church helping raise funds and working with the Altar Society. She was a wonderful cook who made Maltese specialties including calamari and a special cheese-filled dessert called pastizzi for which she rolled out the phyllo dough herself, her family said. She and her husband, Thomas, would have celebrated their 50th anniversary this spring. She is also survived by Charles' twin brother, Thomas Jr., and daughters Deborah and Roseann. Visitation will be 4-9 p.m. today and 1-9 p.m. Tuesday at Salowich & Stevens Funeral Home, 3833 Livernois in Detroit. Funeral mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday Most Holy Trinity Church, Sixth and Porter. Burial will be at St. Hedwig Cemetery in Dearborn Heights.

Obituary: on 30 January 2002: Geri Lou Hatcher Micallef -- Many Coastside friends and acquaintances recall Geri Lou Hatcher Micallef, who grew up and attended school in Half Moon Bay. Mrs. Micallef died Jan. 25 at age 49 at home in Elk Grove, Calif., after battling ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig's Disease. Her passing left a void for friends and relatives including her parents, who sold their Half Moon Bay business, Half Moon Bay Key & Lock Co., early last August and moved to Elk Grove to be near her upon learning of her illness. "She was a beautiful, loving, caring, charitable daughter," said her father, Bob Hatcher, now of Elk Grove. "She was totally unselfish and would help anyone with anything that was needed. In my eyes, she ranked right there with Princess Diana in her beauty, grace and caring."
Mrs. Micallef was born in Iowa, but when she was in her teens, came with her family to California. The family settled in San Mateo in 1966 and then moved to the Coastside in 1968, where Mrs. Micallef attended Half Moon Bay High School. While attending high school, she worked for Original Johnny's coffee shop. She graduated in 1970. In the September following her graduation, she married Joe Micallef, a third-generation lifelong Half Moon Bay resident. The couple moved frequently, living in San Jose, Monterey, the El Dorado Hills, and Modesto before settling in Elk Grove nearly 20 years ago.
Mrs. Micallef worked with her husband's business, a sales tax consulting business that represented small-business owners in tax auditing situations. The couple also gave frequently to charities in the Sacramento area, particularly to Gifts from the Heart, a program of the local Health and Human Services. Through this, they gave in support of from 25 to 30 disadvantaged children . Mrs. Micallef is survived by her husband of 31 years, Joe Micallef III, her son Joseph Micallef IV and his wife, Sarah, and her grandsons Joseph Micallef V and Gavin Micallef, all of Elk Grove. She is survived by her parents Robert and Carol Hatcher, her brothers Rob Hatcher of El Granada and Rick Hatcher of Half Moon Bay, her sister Janet Hopper of Santa Rosa, her grandmother Geraldine Hatcher of Council Bluffs, Iowa and her mother- and father-in-law, Joseph Micallef II and his wife Marge, of Stockton. She is also survived by her aunt and uncle by marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Al Adreveno of Half Moon Bay.
